Songs with great bridges

Sometimes a bridge is better than the song it is in. I love a good
bridge. Here are a few of my favorites:

"Desperately Wanting" by Better Than Ezra - I love the lyrical part of
this bridge, but the instrumental interlude leading back to the verse
is a tad bit over the top ("Oh those letters you dropped off....")

"Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters - Everything Dave Grohl does is good,
but this bridge makes me sing along every time ("Fly along with me I
can't quite make it alone......")

"Fall on Me" by REM - I have a soft spot for old REM songs having
played lots of them back in my college cover band days in the late
80s. This song is great and the Mike Mills sung bridge is lotsa fun
("...and then it wouldn't be sky anymore....")

What are some of your favorite bridges? (In the wake of the Minnesota
interstate bridge disaster, please avoid structural bridge jokes.)

Really good point on the Beatles. The little harpiscord solo bridge
played by George Martin in "In My Life" is a standout. Another fave
is the bridge in "You Won't See Me" off Rubber Soul.

Cheap Trick too - even though that's derrivative Beatles - but still, great
stuff...

"We can Work it out" - a 3/4 bridge in a 4/4 song :)

Gotta agree with that. It's a textbook example of what a bridge should
be.

I also really like the bridge in Peter Gabriel's "And Through the
Wire". It's breaks up the structure of the song at the right time, and
leads back into the chorus riff.

Yeah, now I'm gonna have to learn the tune and see exactly what they did.
You know, if they went to the relative minor or not. That's VERY common.
Somehow I doubt the did that in that tune tho.

Agreed... Bridges are supposed to do that. Music is all about tension and
release. Eh?

Thats not a bridge guys. Its the chorus. The bridge is usually about half as
long as the chorus. Many songs dont have a bridge. Sometimes its only
instrumental.
It works like the turn around in a song which sets you back up to where
you started from so that you can start a new verse.

Well, there was 'Badge' by Cream, which was actually named for George
Harrison's magnificent leslie-flavored badge, er, bridge.

Officially (both Clapton & Harrison have said this), the story is that the
music was written, in manuscript, by Clapton, and presented to George in the
studio. The place where George's part started was labeled in (Clapton's)
handwriting "Bridge". Logical enough. But when George looked at it, he said
"what's that? Badge??"

Everyone present got such a good laugh, the song was named that. As it
turned out, it hadn't really had a name up to then; the name certainly
doesn't go with the lyrics in any obvious way.

No. I learn't to play guitar so no one would ask me to sing and dance. I
didn't know you had to do all 3 at once. New band want me to sing

Led Zeppelin 'In the Evening', or the one in 'Carouselambra' - in both
cases the song lays right back for a while then starts up again.

Speaking of Zeppelin, in their song 'The Crunge' Plant sings "Has
anybody seen the bridge?" near the end (presumably because the song
doesn't have one?)

I had wondered the same thing. After that he says, "Where's the
confounded bridge?" like if they had previously rehearsed the song with
a bridge and then (unexpectedly to him) eliminated it in that take.
Incidentally there are great bridges in a lot of Led Zeppelin songs.

I always thought that line was someone else's voice, an overdub of a
line from a film or something. I'm sure it's explained somewhere on the
net but I feel I'm too obsessed as it is to go looking :)

No, it's a joke reference to James Brown, who in a few songs exhorted
the band to "Take it to the bridge!". Actually, the whole song is a
James Brown joke reference.

Near anything by Pink Floyd. I hate and a 1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4
repetitive songs. Give me variation, and Floyd have it every time. I.e.
Shine on you crazy Diamond. Also Porcupine Tree and Blind Melon.

An Aussie cracker "Evie" in 3 parts IIRC. Here is "The Wrights" doing a
modern version which is pretty close to the original. The Wrights are
Nic Cester [Jet], Chris Cheney [The Living End], Kram [Spiderbait],
Davey Laine [You Am I / The Pictures], Pat Bourke [Dallas Crane],
Bernard Fanning [Powderfinger], and Phil Jamieson [Grinpsoon].

I doesn't get much better than this;-)

I haven't yet watched the videos you linked, but I will. As for
Layla, the part I imagine you are referring to (the part that begins
with the piano alone) is probably more of a coda since it doesn't go
back to a verse or chorus, but it is still excellent and
unforgettable. Thanks for your thoughts...

Mike
I doesn't get much better than this;-)
Part 1 http://youtu.be/VlLcJ4RL0Wk
Part 2 http://youtu.be/AUahyS-wfLo (The bridge)
Part 3 http://youtu.be/GvrbtXM4DxA
Watch them back to back and you'll get the idea. Every good as Layla
(Another great bridge).
Mark
Nice White Falcon in part 1!
I always had a hankering for a Jet Firebird..... Till I saw the price;-)
What did you think of the tune Rich? I wish I could find the original
(1970's) version. It was a real butt kicker.
Mark
Very good! I'd like to learn more about the band!
The Wrights were set up as a tribute to Stevie Wright, ex lead singer to
the Easybeats. George Young of the EB's played on the original too and
is brother to Angus and Malcolm Young. I'll let you guess what band they
are in;-)

Any way here is the info on the Wrights;

Thanks Mark! And oh yeah, I know all about the Easybeats and George Young
(and Harry Vanda too!). My old high school/college band (called "Mother's
Little Helpers", believe it or not) used to cover "Friday On My Mind".

Not a bad line up, probably the best thing anyone from 'jet' has ever done.
It's a pity the original was never posted, there's a clip from a concert
I've seen at one time, stevie had a beard beware he was so smack ravaged.
Black Eyed Bruiser is there on youtube. You can see AC/DC wanted a vocalist
that had what stevie had when they enlisted Bon Scott. Or conversely, maybe
stevie was influenced by BS.

"guitar band" he looks like shit on this one . . . wonder what the 'S'
stands for on his outfit? the mind boggles.

Best Bridges:

Don't call me Dude, by Ugly Kid Joe ("Step by step, by inch by inch...")
Daughter, by Pearl Jam ("She holds the hand, that holds her down...")

They do what bridges are meant to do; make you wait in anticipation, and
then come back into the song swinging!

Love that Pearl Jam bridge. Seems like they have a few other good
ones as well.

I just heard a bad song with a bad bridge on my way home for lunch.
The song is "Invisible Touch" by Genesis. Yes, that song is insipid
and annoying, and in upholding these qualities the bridge does not
disappoint. It sounds like the song goes up a step and has a vamping
keyboard part for about 8 bars then back into the chorus.
