Digitech RP12

Hi,

I own a Digitech RP12 and it's a few years old now. I'm thinking about
retiring it because it is old and I want to go back to the individual pedals
again. The RP12 has a very nice distortion setting built in called "Heavy
Chunk". I really love that sound for the style that I play.

I'm wondering if anyone else out there owns an RP12 and has used that exact
same distortion setting? I want to know if there is an individual pedal I
could buy whether it be Digitech or Boss or any other brand that sounds just
like the "Heavy Chunk" on the RP12? Also, does anyone know if the Digitech
Grunge pedal would work to replace my RP12 as far as the "Heavy Chunk" sound
that I am using?

Thanks,

Shannon

Shannon,
There are several good distortion pedals available on the market
today,The grunge is probably going to be the closest, since they are
both of around the same era.I have always had good luck with getting a
good chunky sound out of a grunge pedal.Make sure you write down your
parameters of the rp-12 to have a ground zero to start from when
dialing in you tone.Don't forget to that there is probably
compression,and gating on that program.

Your right, I forgot about the compression and gating that is also used in
that effect.

I guess I need to start by choosing which pedals to buy if I am going to
retire my RP12. I should probably look at, Distortion, Compression, Delay,
Equalizer, Wah and a couple of others to set up my rig. These were all
built in the RP12 and I never really thought about them.

I own an Epiphone Les Paul Standard with Seymour Duncan Jazz neck and JB
bridge pickups and a Fender 80's "The Twin" amp. I get a pretty good sound
using the RP12 but I think the RP12 is cutting out a lot of my true sound
that I should be getting from my amp. I wan't to try a different setup and
am open to any suggestions you make.

Thanks,

Shannon

Shannon look seriously at the Boss me 50.Easy to program, sounds are
better, and you can shut off or on chorus, delay, and distortion, like
stompboxes.Of couse built in tuner...blah ,blah ,just like everyone. In
the 300 dollar range, boss and zoom sound the best.I like the boss
cause I'm used to progaming there stuff.

Hi,

I'm just a lurker on the board. However, I'm a former Digitech RP12 owner
(upgraded from an RP10).

There were 3 solid state preamp voicings built in, Overdrive, Heavy Sustain,
& Grunge. I'm not sure where you're getting this "Heavy Chunk" you
mentioned.

I was quite happy with the unit, but tweaking it was a major pain. You have
to get beyond the presets & build your own patches in order to get a grip on
just how powerful the unit is.(this is true for most multifx) I found that
the Heavy Sustain, & Grunge were the most usable distorted sounds once
tweaked. The digital effects section is where the RP12 really shined. The
built in Whammy pedal was pretty cool, along twith the various reverbs &
delays.

When I purchased a Boss GT-3 a few years back the RP12 saw little use so I
gave it to a friend.

Hi, the Heavy Chunk was a banked preset created by default in the RP12. It
used Heavy Sustain voicing as well as others like gating and compression to
create the built in foot selectable preset.

Oh man My RP12 is a doorstop. Hate it. I use it to control my midi
functions on my amp thats it. Becasue it is solid state and a preamp it
preamps the preamp. Yuck. Sorry... Also hate how hard it is to tweak
stuff. Go with a good boss chorus, tasty distortion box and they rackmount
the delay, etc....
