Yeah, I read about that and it's a real shame; the guy was only 52
years old. Everybody hated him back in the 80's for all the trash
talking he did about other bands but he was still a really good metal
singer/screamer. I also admire that he was still performing with
Quiet Riot all these years even after their fame waned over time; he
got a hell of a lot further in music than most people ever will.

Well, that band broke up an awful lot of times, usually over him.
They dumped him once, someplace far off, everybody went home, ditched
the gigs comin up and left him there to take the heat, don't remember
where that was. I remember him being extremely way too much cocky
early 80's, I was around him a few times and didn't like him much. He
was big on this whole "we will be bigger than the beatles thing", he
pulled that one alot. Yeah, sure, was about all you could say. Sorry
to hear this though. Well, unless he's been hiding his monster drug
problems all these years.

Last I heard, he had a radio show in Las Vegas. A coworker and I were
talking about how he probably wasn't a bad guy, but I said he came off like
an asshat with a really bad voice who didn't write his own material and that
if it wasn't for Randy Rhoads---

She said "Wait...you like Ozzy, right?"

Pretty much took the steam right out of my argument.

How does "if it wasn't for Randy Rhodes" apply? I know Randy was in
QR, but he did not play on Metal Health, their big hit. No one ever
heard a Randy Rhodes QR song.

The facts are, they regrouped AFTER Randy got big with Ozzy - since they had
two albums in the can with him.... Metal Health wouldn't have come out, 'if
it wasn't for Randy'

BTW - I fired up I&II last night (in tribute)... Man, those albums are a LOT
better than I remembered.... Catchy stuff.

Rhoads was such a mindblowing, firebreathing force of friggin' Nature
on metal guitar with Ozzy that the name Quiet Riot got a huge boost
just 'cuz he was in it, which helped Dubrow recruit one of the hottest
guitarists on the LA scene, Cavazo, from Snow. And then "Metal Health"
got airplay...Oh yea: I had owned those two japanese LPs tha QR did.
Sorta bubblegum hard rock, very androgynous look of the band. Nothing
in the way of massive MXR Distortion Plus blasted through Marshalls
you hear later on Ozzy records... Nowhere on those two QR LPs do you
get a hint of Rhoads's massive monster chops...although he apparently
had 'em. He just didn't include them in those very poppy sappy QR
songs like "We're The Raiders." You listen to those albums and go,
"that guitarist is really good for that kind of poppy shit, I wonder
if the 14 yr old japanese girls that are so into him realize it?"

I remember hearing the first Ozzy record, and when my friend said it
was "Randy Rhoads" I thought it must've been a joke. No way can that
QR guy be the one scorching the Earth with the "I Don't Know" solo! It
was. You realize some guys hold back for the sake of the overall
intent of the record, which is what Rhoads apparently was doing in QR,
although I later heard he shredded if you saw QR at Gazzari's, just as
EVH was doing across town in some other club, and George Lynch in
Exciter at some other venue in LA.

Anyway, I'm asserting that Dubrow benefitted heavily from being in the
orbit of Rhoads, and I wonder what the cause of death was...52 yrs
old?

Oh that was bad. I take it back.
If you told someone a rock star had died from something that ended in
"-aine" you'd probably guess "cocaine." Alas, no one knew the isidious
dangers of Rogaine, and its lethal-over-time active ingredient,
Minoxydil...which is sometimes confused with the Mixolydian scale,
which is the same as the major scale, but with a flatted 7th. Which
also kills, by the way. But I digress.

So I guess my point is: Dubrow was NOT killed by the Mixolydian scale.
The coroner's office will confirm this shortly, I suppose.

It was the all the rage to be New Wave at that historical moment in
pop music, USA. And the japanese kids loved QR. Record deal there, not
here. Probably the main reason Rhoads dropped out and just taught for
awhile. At the same time, QR had a huge following in Hollywood and
environs, so the name echoed around for awhile. When Ozzy got huge in
1982, the time for hair metal had arrived, and LA was the epicenter.
Time to re-form QR, get a hot guitarist, get signed, do a record, play
the Strip constantly, hope for airplay. A lot of really good bands
from that era never made it. I thought Stormer was pretty good. Their
bass player later made a few records with Stryper. (!) Anyway. Rhoads
was in right place, wrong time with QR.

pardon my ignorance, i know next to nothing about Randy Rhoads. The
guy's playing never did anything for me at all, none of that Ozzy
stuff did. Sorry. He sure could play fast and all that.... but thats
just not my thing.

OK I liked the wild maniacal laughter at the beginning of Crazy Train
but honestly, i hated Rhoades guitar sound.

Why didn't Rhoads re-join QR? 'Cuz they had reformed and were playing
the clubs and recording the first QR since Rhoads left, all the while
Rhoads was on tour with Ozzy. Then Rhoads died on March 19, 1982; The
first post-Rhoads QR album, Metal Health, came out in 1983. To re-join
would've proven quite a feat.

That's a shame. That's too young for anyone to die.

But for me he also represents everything that was wrong with the 80's
music scene. OTT excessive histrionics, bad songs, bad lyrics, shitty
attitude, soulless guitars. I don't mean to pile on the guy, just
what he represents.

Yep, Ritchie and Dubrow and a few other guys from that era...but there
was a time - esp during the 1980s - when it was almost a CRIME in
those circles not to have massive hair. These days, kids grew up
listening to "old" bands like Smashing Pumpkins, who had (have?) a
cool guitarist.singer who's bald. And still pretty young at that. A
lot less pressure to look outrageously "cool." (That's a very bizarre
claim, I know. Anyone looked at the book _American Hair Metal_ by
Steven Blush, copyright 2006, from Feral House pub? A photography book
that treats all those 80s hair bands as a sort of anthropological
"lost tribe." Funny in an odd way.)

Man, I remember the pressure to have huge hair back then, LA c.
1983...

I knew people who knew Dubrow, and almost everyone said he was fun but
seemingly couldn't help himself when he said caustic shit about his
competition.

You cd say he got really lucky when Rhoads came along. Without Rhoads,
where wd Dubrow have been?

Or Ozzy for that matter...

Nonetheless: RIP Kevin Dubrow!

The bad thing is.... Pauly Shore is the ONLY name I recognized there :)

Klaus always had bad hair..It was rough for those guys like him, and
Halford....Luckily, Halford didn't really break through until he was bald -
but some of those early, early videos have him with AWESOME long hair.

Nonetheless: RIP Kevin Dubrow!
It wasn't just metal guys - look at Paul Simon and Elton John...

think Simon has just switched to hats...
Didn't all the Scorpions go bald too? Credit to them though, no
rugs. I feel for Klaus...there's one poor bastard who can't win. If
he shaves it off, he looks like a Biafran refugee; if he cuts it
short, he looks like Pauly Shore. If he leaves that balding rat's
nest long, he looks like Bilbo Baggins.

It's not a fairly tale life if you're living it... I'm pretty sure I'd prefer
being a working musician than getting to work at 8AM each day. Does that make
me a 'boy'?? You want rules or somebody to tell you what to do, go to
prison.... I think it's safe to say he led a rich life...

I can tell you I'd love to make a lucrative living as a musician and I
am actually pecking away at being able to do that. I plan on a combo
of teaching and performing to pull it off. The problem is getting in a
financial position to do it. Heck I'd settle for pulling down a grand
a week if I could on a steady basis.

I thought Quiet Riot was crappy pre and post Rhodes era. Terrible. 52 is
young but I dont feel sorry for him.
Its a hell of allot longer than many people I've known and loved made it.
I hope his soul rests in peace though.

I have to say it, but I liked Quiet Riot. They were cheesy, sure - but
ALL those hair bands were. The thing about Quiet Riot was that they
didn't really appeal to women, I think. That's why I think they never
really stayed popular after they hit it big. They were actually pretty
decent musicians - Rudy Sarzo certainly kept busy in lots of other
bands for many years, and I think maybe he is in Dio or something even
now. Franky Banalli (sp?) the drummer was pretty good, I have heard
he's actually on a few studio recordings by other bands, where the
drumming is credited to the drummer in the band. Cavazo never really
got past the shadow of Randy. Which is a shame, because he (Carlos)
played on all the big hits, and obviously was pretty good, maybe a
little too generic. Kevin DuBrow was a pretty decent singer in a
Brian Johnson kind of way, he was funny, and I bet he would have been
pretty entertaining live back in the day when they were a big act. You
do have to respect the guy for sticking with it. It had to have been
some lean times during the 90's when nobody wanted to hear the type of
stuff they did.

probably the biggest asshole I've ever met there. Ron Keel was another

we need" guy at the Capitol Center for the Arts years ago and he was
probably the biggest asshole I've ever met there. Ron Keel was another
jerkoff that rivaled Kevin's assholeness. Can't say I'm saddened but
may he RIP.
Jeez... a Keel reference :) Funny stuff...
However, keep in mind, Ron had... The right to rock :)
Oh shit! You just cracked me up. I have people at work staring at me
wondering why I was laughing so hard out of the blue.
I remember once being at a Slayer show (at L'amours) around '84 and making
fun of some kid for some reason (did we really need reasons back then?? :)
He crippled me by pointing out my Keel shirt..... Oh, the humanity :) It was
a dark day for heavy metal :)- Hide quoted text -

Oh yes I remember those days. I had a Twisted Sister shirt and got
called a poseur on many occasions for it so I threw it away. I guess
cos it had pink in it, who knows lol. Ahh the days of mosh pits and
spiked armbands. Going to Nuclear Assault, Testament, and Nasty Savage
amongst all the other "Thrash" shows!
Nuclear Assault! Now THERE'S a blast from the past! I saw those guys
at Billy O's on Staten Island(?) back in the 80's.
I was there in the 80's - I wonder why I never heard of that place... I
remember the St. George Theatre in Staten Island - I think I saw Manowar
there.. Or how about those days when Metallica would open for The Rods or
Anthrax?? :)

Those were cool shirts - mostly one ones from 'You can't stop....'

Except that he's playing country music these days. I guess that means
he has the right to kick shit now. ;)

He keeps going back and forth.. He was with IronHorse for a while - which was
'slightly' country.... He is living in Nashville now, so, I guess you're
technically right..
