Old Fender Ads

Back in the mid 70s, Fender had a series of print ads that
depicted their products as animals: The P-Bass as a lion, and
there was one of a Telecaster as an eagle if memory serves. There
could have been others. Anyone else remember those, or have scans
of them? It was a pretty cool idea, I thought. Didn't last long,
though.
I do. You could get some of them as posters. I sent away for the one
for their new Starcaster model. It was an Alice in Wonderland scene -
Alice was standing at the base of the giant mushroom, atop of which sat
the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, who was playing a Starcaster. I wonder
if I have that poster is still around somewhere...?

Somebody with a solid old GP collection and a scanner should post
these somewhere...
If anyone could narrow the dates down a bit I could check. I have a
bunch of old GPs from back then.

Well, the first issue of GP I ever saw had Joe Walsh on the cover. I think
it had to be sometime in 1975. May? June? For some reason I think it was
late spring or early summer. This is pretty specific stuff to be pulling out
of my head more than 25 years later, but I'm *pretty* sure. Now, the
Starcaster, I don't think the model *lasted* past 76, so offhand, I'd say if
you can check the 75-76 issues, you'll probably find all the ads in
question. I wish I could do better, but then if I had the magazines myself
to actually check, well, you know.

Anyway, thanks in advance if you're up to the task.

Good memory! You were right about the dates. I found some of them. You
can see scans of them here:

This is the storybook ad campaign, which I guess is different than the
one animal ads asked about in the original post. I'll look some more
for those while I have the magazines out.

Thanks, man! That was a total stroll down memory lane! You'd think somebody
would publish a coffee-table book of all the cooler ads from various music
companies through the years. There have been some doozies... maybe someone
has. *I'd* buy a copy.

You know who else had neat ads sometimes, BC Rich. Not high concept like the
Fender ones we're talking about, but still cool. I liked the "[insert name
of musician] and his BC Rich [insert model name]" series. They did Rick
Derringer, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, and several others. Good stage shots,
usually.

Best,

Oh, *yeah*... They're STILL at it, BTW, Dean are. They have some eye-poppers
in the current issues of GP.

Very cool. Thank you again. I had never seen the baboon one, but the
Starcaster croc looks familiar.

You're welcome. I found another one of the Fender Storybook ads, and
also some of the Animal ads that were mentioned at the beginning of

alice looks kinda hot in those knee high socks.
And we KNOW she's ready to party, given this exchange:

"I am precisely three inches high," said the Caterpillar, "though I
frequently become much higher."

With that magic mushroom?" Alice asked eagerly.
